Abstract. The two communes of Normée en Champagne (Marne) and Saint-Véran en Queyras (High Alps), altough they have very different geographical contexts, have a common characteristic. That is the common grazing of Sheep, However, the terms of employment and the status of the « common shepherd » are not the same in both places. In Normée the sheep owners share the cost of paying a shepherd, on a pro rata basis, depending on the number of sheep they have in the common flock. In Saint-Véran, where the « local assembly », the « syndics », and the « procurators » still have an influence on the community, the « common shepherd » is, on a day to day basis, one of the sheep owners, who looksafter the sheep in turns, whichaare drawn by lot.
