Pallava iconography in structural temples (8th century A. D. in Tamil Nadu, South-East of India), which is essentially Śaiva, includes the figure of the demon-king of Laṅkā, Rāvaņa, in several narrative contexts. Having drawn attention to the first images of this demon lifting the mountain upon which Śiva sits, which appear in North India in the 5th century, and having pointed out also the first textual appearances of this myth in Sanskrit literature, this paper analyses all Pallava reliefs in structural temples where Rāvaņa is depicted.
