La montagne des Suisses. Invention et usage d'une représentation paysagère (XVIIIe-XXe siècle)

Swiss Mountains : Inventing and Using a Representation of the Landscape (18th-20th Century) This history of the process that crosses "spaciality" and "discursivity" at the point of identifying a type of landscape and its inhabitants (herein the Alps and Switzerland) shows how a set of places differentiated by use has served to gradually construct a landscape, which is to be interpreted in aesthetic and anthropological terms as of the 18th century, before it became mainly economic. In the case of Switzerland however, the "aestheticization" of the countryside into landscapes has been closely associated with building the nation during the 19th century, whence the necessity of an ideological sort of interpretation. Such is the problem of the chosen sites that landscapes represent as places of memory. Their production contrasts with another process, namely the diffusion of a Swiss ideal type of landscape and the misappropriation of a landscape, which gradually lost its symbolic contents throughout the 19th century.Cet article se propose de faire l'histoire du processus qui croise spatialité et discursivité au point d'identifier un type paysager et les habitants du territoire considéré, ici la montagne alpine et la Suisse. Il s'agit de montrer comment d'un ensemble de lieux différenciés par l'usage on a construit peu à peu un paysage dont la lisibilité est dès le XVIIIe siècle d'ordre esthétique et anthropologique avant de devenir surtout économique. Une spécificité toutefois : dans le cas de la Suisse, l'esthétisation du pays en paysage est étroitement associée à la construction de la nation au XIXe siècle, d'où la nécessité d'introduire un autre mode de lisibilité, d'ordre idéologique. C'est tout le problème de ces territoires d'élection que sont les paysages lieux de mémoire. Leur production contraste avec un autre processus spécifique qui est la diffusion de l'idéal type paysager helvétique et le détournement d'un paysage qui perd ainsi progressivement au XXe siècle son contenu symbolique.Walter François.
