Espace, populations et Providence dans les écrits des « Pères Pèlerins » (1620-1622)

This article retraces the evolution of the perception of Amerindian populations by the founders of Plymouth, in New England, before and shortly after crossing the Atlantic in 1620, through a reading of their narratives, namely William Bradford’s History of Plymouth Plantation, mainly, but also Mourt’s Relation (1622), attributed to Bradford and Edward Winslow, which contains a long letter by Robert Cushman, and Winslow’s Good Newes from New England (1624). The providential prism inherent in Calvinist authors, the diplomatic dimensions as well as the discourse legitimizing the settlement of the English on already occupied lands are taken into account to reveal the indissociability of the various population groups and of a region on which the English managed to integrate.Cet article retrace l’évolution de la perception des populations amérindiennes par les fondateurs de Plymouth, en Nouvelle-Angleterre, avant et peu après la migration de 1620, à travers une relecture des récits des premiers colons : l’Histoire de la Colonie de Plymouth de William Bradford, principalement, mais aussi Mourt’s Relation, attribué à Bradford et Edward Winslow (1622), où figure une longue lettre de Robert Cushman, et Good Newes from New England de Winslow (1624). L'auteur souligne l’indissociabilité des différents groupes de populations et de l’espace, véritable échiquier sur lequel les Anglais ont finalement su s’intégrer, en analysant le prisme providentiel inhérent aux auteurs calvinistes ainsi que les dimensions diplomatique et le discours visant à légitimer l’installation des Anglais sur des terres déjà occupées.Henneton Lauric.
