Abstract : This paper deals with the strategies that the Gradis family - a prominent Jewish merchant firm of Bordeaux - adopted in the 18th century to cope with expanding Atlantic trade. In doing so, it illustrates the opportunities that the Atlantic World offered to an important merchant house. The increasing participation in colonial and Atlantic trade throughout the century allowed for the Gradis' spectacular rise to prominence. Colonial trade and commets with the French government to provide provisions and money to colonial authorities progressively became the bulk of the firm' s business.
