Popular music culture enabled women to question gender relations in Kinshasa, one of the most fascinating cities of Africa. Originally characterized by male dominance Zairean popular music also became, around the 1950s, an arena in which women were able to undermine colonial values and negotiate the colonial gender imbalance. Through social clubs, organized to promote their own agenda, they afforded themselves of new social and economic opportunities. As a result, women are now empowered to challenge male 's prevalence as depicted in the song Mario.
