At the end of the 18th century, the official presence of the French in India was limited. Those French who remained in a private capacity, being in direct contact with the Indian population, were able to note several details on the Indian village which they labelled « aidée ». They situated their remarks on land ownership within the European debate on oriental despotism. They underlined the Indian particularities concerning cultivating rights and the levying of land taxes as well as a validation of the local power by the central power.
