The French banking activities in Asia are first of all intended to prop up business trading between the Far East and Europa, through banking points sustaining the commercial warehouses : the very trade competition explains that first move in the years 1860s-1880s, when the main actors are the Comptoir d'escompte and the Banque de l'Indochine. A second step gives priority to a strategy of containment of the British strength in trade and finance in China : the French interests are deployed between 1890 and 1920 in the Far Eastern railways and on the banking places, whilst Paris becomes at last an important actor in the issuing of Asiatic loans.
