France in Central America 1820s-1929 : an overview

French society's well-being and the French economy's growth and accumulation rates were intimately linked to the world economy. French relations to Central America reflected this pursuit of well-being and security. All metropoles assumed that Central America was capable of joining two inefficiently linked half worlds into one efficient economic System which would facilitate world accumulation. France, a major capital exporter and commercial power, competed with other metropoles at the isthmus for access to raw materials, consumer markets, and investment opportunities. This competition among French, German, British, and U.S. interests remained central to understanding metropole intrusions into Middle America. French business and govemmental circles expected an appreciable French role on the isthmus throughout the period from the 1820s to 1929, although the expectation shifted from commerce to a canal, to investment, and finally to cultural influence.Le bien-être de la société française et la croissance et l'accumulation de l'économie française étaient liés très étroitement avec l'économie du monde. Les relations françaises avec l'Amérique centrale réfléchissaient cette poursuite de bien-être et sécurité. Toutes les métropoles supposaient que l'Amérique centrale était capable de joindre deux demi-mondes mal liés dans un système économique efficace qui faciliterait l'accumulation mondiale. La France, une nation majeure d'exportation des fonds et un pouvoir commercial, rivalisait avec les autres métropoles dans l'isthme pour l'accès aux matières premières, marchés et opportunités d'investissements.
