The development of York in its Viking-Age or Anglo-Scandinavian period (866-1066) is discussed against the physical characteristics of the site, the historical record of its settlement over the preceding eight centuries, and the recent discovery of an important focus of Anglian (7lh-9Ih century) occupation and commerce. This, together with the excavation of a series of Viking-age waterlogged sites where evidence is particularly well preserved, has emphasised the degree of change in the city in the later 9'h and early 10th century, which can now be seen as the crucial period in the formation of the medieval city.Hall Richard Andrew.
