Abstract. - Appian of Alexandria, who lived in the second century of our era, was not only a historian of Rome and a Roman citizen, but also a Greek rhetor and scholar interested in Hellad's historical and mythical past. In the fifth book of the Civil Wars, a passage considered until now as a locus desperatus provides evidence for that dual aspect. According to the manuscripts, Caesar and Lepidus joined together in "the territory belonging to the Παλαιστηνῶν, not long before the battle of Naulocha. We suggest correcting into πάλαι Λαιστρυγόνων and translating by "the land formerly belonging to the Laestrygones".
