The purpose of this paper is to investigate the image of Agesilaus in contemporary or near contemporary fourth century B.C. Greek historiography. A first part is devoted to the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia. The narrative of Agesilaus' campaign in Asia Minor in 395 B.C. is written in such a way as to convey a less than flattering picture of the king-commander. In his remarkably parallel accounts in the Hellenica and the Agesilaus Xenophon contradicts such a depiction, representing the campaign as a great success. Both works are analysed in the ensuing part of this paper.
