The representation of the isle of Lemnos given by Sophocles strikes one by the way it contrasts with the image of it given in the Iliad : the island, originally fertile, rich and commercial is, in the tragedy, the objet of the rewriting which makes it a place of solitude and savagery "par excellence". In fact, such metamorphosis allows the dramatist to present a hero who is brought down to the level of bestiality ; moreover, an analysis reveals that Philoctetus has a definite affinity with Polyphemus.
