Cainis, Elatos's daughter, was, by the will of Poseidon, transformed into an invunerable man, Caineus. Caineus, guilty of impious- ness, was buried alive by the Centaurs under a bulk of pine truncs of the Pelion. This myth inspired many writers during Antiquity and, in modern times, gave rise to many interpretations. The present paper tries to show that this myth, strictly speaking thessalian, teaches much on the origins of the settlements and on the "historic geography" of the Thessaly.Caïnis, fille d'Élatos, fut métamorphosée par la volonté de Poséidon en un homme invulnérable, Caïneus.
