Le château des Albret à Labrit (Landes)

The castrum de Lebreto, constructed in the heart of the eponymous domain of the Albret family, on the northern margin of the Marsan viscounty, appears to be representative of castle constructions of private origin used by great land owners, after the year 1000, to locally extend their domination and seize banal prerogatives. In contrast to expectations, the data provided by archaeology prove that the edification of this “ motte and bailey ” type castle occurred much later, around 1225-1230. The emergence of the Albret family in the 11th century, in the group of nobiles and principes of the entourage of the duke, thus does not appear to be related to an emancipation supported by the initiative of castle construction. By marginalizing the role of the castle in the rise of this lineage, this observation suggests that in Gascony the power of the duke had to preserve the capacity to maintain the fidelity of the most eminent lineages while also limiting their impulse to construct fortifications on their lands. Two centuries after the institutional and social mutation of the 10th and 11th centuries, at the time when the Albrets, who possessed several other seigneuries distributed over Bazadais and Condomois, were poised to rise to the highest rank of the aristocracy of the duchy, the construction of the Labrit castle on their original land reveals, not a desire to autonomize the power of this family, but a preoccupation with increasing the political and economic value of its ancestral landholdings in the Landes region. In the specific context of the Grandes Landes de Gascogne area, which was still not completely colonized at the beginning of the 13th century, Labrit thus provides an example of a “ secondary ” castrum founded to strengthen control over a vast, geographically dispersed seigneury and enhance the value of new properties.Edifié au coeur du domaine éponyme de la famille d’Albret, sur la marge nord de la vicomté de Marsan, le castrum de Lebreto paraissait représentatif des créations castrales d’origine privée sur lesquelles, après l’an Mil, s’appuyèrent de grands propriétaires fonciers pour localement étendre leur domination et s’emparer de prérogatives banales. Contrairement à toute attente, les données chronologiques acquises par l’archéologie apportent la preuve que l’édification de ce château type “ motte et basse-cour ” intervint beaucoup plus tardivement, vers 1225-1230. L’émergence des Albret, dès le XIe s., dans le groupe des nobiles et des principes de l’entourage ducal, ne serait donc pas, semble-t-il, liée à une émancipation appuyée sur l’initiative d’une création castrale. Marginalisant le rôle du château dans l’ascension de ce lignage, ce constat laisse envisager qu’en Gascogne le pouvoir ducal dut conserver la capacité de s’attacher la fidélité des lignages les plus éminents tout en limitant leurs velléités d’ériger des fortifications dans leurs domaines. Deux siècles après la mutation institutionnelle et sociale des Xe-XIe s., alors que les Albret en possession de plusieurs autres seigneuries, réparties en Bazadais et Condomois, étaient en passe de se hisser au plus haut rang de l’aristocratie du duché, la construction du castrum de Labrit sur les terres de leur domaine d’origine releva, par conséquent, non d’une logique d’autonomisation du pouvoir de cette famille, mais de sa préoccupation de valoriser, au plan politique et économique, ses ancestrales possessions foncières landaises. Dans le contexte spécifique de l’espace des Grandes Landes de Gascogne, dont la colonisation restait inachevée au début du XIIIe s., Labrit procure ainsi l’exemple d’un castrum “ secondaire ” fondé pour resserrer l’encadrement d’une vaste seigneurie, géographiquement dispersée, et appuyer la mise en valeur de terres neuves.Laborie Y.
