This work presents an essay extensively summarising the relationships that grew between places of religious worship and habitat in rural Provence over a relatively long period – from late antiquity to the 12th century. This approach is founded on data from written sources and from archaeology. Despite the poor documentation covering certain periods, which can only be approached through occasional brief moments of insight, it underlines the structuring role taken on by the church in the rural world and tries to bring a different slant to the vision of a mediaeval Provence dominated by castle rule where the church found itself in a subordinate position.Ce travail présente un essai de synthèse sur les relations qui s’établissent entre les lieu...
