The Romanesque church of Saint- Martin in the town of Maubourguet, in the middle of the Bigorre plain, has long been a subject of interest to art historians. A number of trial archaeological digs were carried out around it and led to assuming that the site had been occupied well before the Middle Ages. Maubourguet church was closedfor services in 1983 and 1984 within the framework of a restauration programme organized by the Historical Monuments authorities. A team of volunteer archaeologists was able to profit from the occasion to excavate the floor of the church (partially and with limited means).
