Le site castral de Montaillou en Ariège

The Montaillou castle excavation induce accuracies about its chronology and spatial organization. This mountain site, at an altitude of 1350 m, with very few textual documentation and rare preserved elevations, occupy the top of a partially planning relief. The donjon is next to a bailey witch is protected by a surrounding wall without flanked building. The fortress was erected by the lords of Alion around the end of the 12th century, and strengthened by the count of Foix in the second part of the 13th c. Near a postern, a probably aristocratic house is being studied. The ground level include in particular a domestic fireplace and a silo. The site provided also metallurgical artefacts.La fouille du château de Montaillou a permis de préciser la chronologie de son occupation ainsi que son organisation. Ce site de moyenne montagne, très peu documenté par les textes et avec peu d’élévations conservées, occupe le sommet d’un relief partiellement aménagé à 1350 m d’altitude. La tour maîtresse jouxte une basse-cour défendue par un mur d’enceinte dépourvu d’ouvrage de flanquement. La forteresse, érigée vers la fin du XIIe s. par les seigneurs d’Alion, est renforcée dans la seconde moitié du XIIIe s. par le comte de Foix. Près d’une poterne, une habitation, probablement aristocratique, est en cour d’étude. Bien conservé, son rez-de-chaussée a notamment livré un foyer domestique et un silo.
