They can be determined by different analytical techniques such as inductively coupled flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS), graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS), plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and inductively coupled plasma-mass-spectrometry (ICP MS). These techniques differ according to the number of elements that can be determined, the levels of determination, the number of samples that can be determined and the sample volume.
