A survey of the fragments of Aeschylus' Niobe (especially of PSI 1208), of the data of the myth, and of some paintings on Italiot vases very probably referring to a performance of that tragedy, give some information about the contents of the play : Aeschylus only dealt with that part of the myth which takes place immediately after the children's slaughter ; the place is Thebes ; for a long time (about two-fifths of the play) Niobe stands still and silent before her children's grave. Her mother, the Lydian queen Euryamassa, tries to rescue her from her prostration, but in vain : this will be achieved by her father Tantalus, through many prayers and maybe offerings.
