Produksjon av vindkraft har sett en betydelig økning, hovedsaklig ved bruk av horisontale vindturbiner. Disse behøver imidlertid en stor avstand mellom hver turbin grunnet den sterkt reduserte vindhastigheten i turbinens vake. Eksperimenter har vist at denne vaken kan utnyttes av vertikale vindturbiner i par, gitt spesifikke relative plasseringer. På denne måten vil to vertikale vindturbiner plassert tett kunne produsere mer kraft enn to enkeltstående turbiner med større avstand. Dette gir et potensiale for å hente mer vindkraft ut av et mindre areal enn ved bruk av horisontale vindturbiner, både på land og som havvind.
