In this paper we analyze the Grammatical Method for All Languages (1619), by Amaro de Roboredo, a Portuguese author, in order to check the relevance of translation in the construction of a teaching/ learning methodology for teaching Latin using Portuguese language. In trying to Follow Sanctius, in Minerve, Roboredo simplified the grammatical theorization. This epistemological posture is also reflected on the methodology used in Roboredo’s work. In an attempt to make teaching more effective, Roboredo wrote his grammar in Portuguese, using translation principles which would enable students to know theoretically the rules of their mothertongue in order to compare them with those of a foreign language, in this case, the Latin language.
