« Signifié de puissance » et « prototype » : deux réponses à un problème analogue ?

The Psychomechanics of language (PL) and Cognitive Linguistics both deal with the relationship between language and mind. This paper compares several aspects of PL (in particular the notions of potential significate and subduction) and of Rosch’s Prototype Theory (PT) in regard to lexicon and categorization. The respective advantages and disadvantages of the two frameworks are discussed and evaluated. We will argue that the views under discussion are commensurable to the extent that they deal with the same kind of problem. However, as we will show, there is no equivalent to the notion of prototype in Guillaume’s work, which still contains structuralist characteristics, whereas PT is unable to deal as efficiently as PL with some aspects of polysemy, mainly because of its psychological origin. By contrast, PT claims to reach into the structure of concepts, and therefore does not confine itself to the linguistic level. It also offers a more convincing account of interlexical relations.La psychomécanique du langage et la linguistique cognitive traitent chacune, à leur manière, des rapports entre pensée et langage. Cet article rapproche ces deux théories sous l’angle du problème de la conceptualisation et de la catégorisation, et examine les solutions qu’elles y apportent respectivement.
