The aim of this paper is to describe and explain the way in which grammarians of ancient India (from the 4th century B. C. to the 12th century A. D.) named linguistic varieties. The study shows how these scholars seem to have never taken into account external linguistic alterity, though proved from the 3rd century B. C. on.
