In France, the works of Karen Homey, Erich Fromm, Erik. Erikson and Bruno Bettelheim are generally perceived as an expression of American ideology (of the "American way of Life " as enduring stereotype would have it). In fact, cultural psychoanalysis is an original response to the question expressly asked by Hannah Arendt, Theodor Adorno and others in the early fifties : how could totalitarianism prevail in Europe and challenge centuries of progress in civilization ?
