Images occupy a central and specific place in the production and the communication of scientific knowledge. The emergence of modern science in the 1 7th Century has as corollary the appearance of an iconographical type which belongs to another age of knowledge : the images which show "curiosities" and which translate in the form of visual similarities a dense network of significances. These would be dissolved in the instituted forms of scientific writing.
