«The Ovidian Iliad » as it is commonly called, takes place at the beginning of the 14th book of the Metamorphosis, in the mouth of two of its protagonists and not the least, Ajax and UUsses. Indeed, Ovid, after a complete tour of horizon on the subject in the 12 th book, where the art of narration seems to combine with that of the ellipsis, comes back to the events described in an indirect way in the Homeric epic, when the two heroes fight over Achilles' weapons. The emphasis laid on the quarrel itself, which is not found in Homer, is already a definite position on the question of the archetype of the epic, and more generally on the principle of the imitatio which has ruled all artistic creations from the Antiquity to the Classical Age.
