D'Homère à Ovide

«The Ovidian Iliad » as it is commonly called, takes place at the beginning of the 14th book of the Metamorphosis, in the mouth of two of its protagonists and not the least, Ajax and UUsses. Indeed, Ovid, after a complete tour of horizon on the subject in the 12 th book, where the art of narration seems to combine with that of the ellipsis, comes back to the events described in an indirect way in the Homeric epic, when the two heroes fight over Achilles' weapons. The emphasis laid on the quarrel itself, which is not found in Homer, is already a definite position on the question of the archetype of the epic, and more generally on the principle of the imitatio which has ruled all artistic creations from the Antiquity to the Classical Age. The delegation of speech to the characters is another example of a choice not only allowing the selection of the events related, thus avoiding the retelling of well known scenes, but also for the diversity of the points of view, since the orators are telling the same episodes, each giving his own interpretation. Thanks to the tension between the source itself and the text thus produced, the need appears for a critical rereading of the Iliad and of the heroic values traditionally sung in the epic, together with a a claim for newness, particularly in the prominence given to UUsses, a hero in words more than in deeds, which will be at the heart of this study. The staging of the Homeric characters is once more the occasion for a reflexion on the poetic writing that can always be found in the poems of the Metamorphosis. In the echos between the oratory jousting and other artistic rivalries seen in the compilation, in the rhetorical inflection confered on the King of Ithaca's speech, a new aesthetics takes form where the creative drive of the collection seems to be reflected.«U Iliade ovidienne», comme on se plaît à l'appeler communément, prend place au début du livre ΧΓΠ des Métamorphoses, dans la bouche de deux de ses protagonistes et non des moindres, Ajax et Ulysse. En effet, Ovide, après un vaste tour d'horizon sur le sujet au livre ΧΠ, où l'art du récit semble se conjuguer avec celui de l'ellipse, revient sur les événements narrés par l'épopée homérique de façon indirecte, au moment où les deux héros se disputent les armes d'Achille. La mise en exergue de la querelle en soi - qui n'existe pas chez Homère- est déjà une prise de position sur la question de l'archétype de l'épopée et, plus largement, sur le principe de Yimita- tio qui régit toute création artistique de l'antiquité à l'âge classique. La délégation de parole aux personnages constitue un autre parti pris autorisant non seulement la sélection dans les événements narrés - dispensant de rappeler à ses lecteurs les tableaux si connus - mais aussi la diversité des points de vue, puisque ce sont les mêmes épisodes qu'évoquent les orateurs, chacun livrant son interprétation personnelle. Apparaît alors, à travers cette tension entre le texte source et celui ainsi produit une relecture critique de Y Iliade et des valeurs héroïques traditionnellement chantées par l'épopée, ainsi qu'une revendication de nouveauté notamment par la prééminence accordée à Ulysse, héros de parole plus que d'action, qui sera au cœur de l'étude. La mise en scène de personnages homériques est encore le lieu d'une réflexion sur l'écriture poétique dont les poèmes des Métamorphoses ne sont jamais exempts : par les échos entre la joute oratoire et d'autres rivalités artistiques présentes dans le recueil, par l'infléchissement rhétorique conféré au discours du roi d'Ithaque, se dessine une esthétique nouvelle où semble se refléter la démarche créatrice de tout le recueil.Casanova-Robin Hélène.
