Before the Chinese conquest of the Red River Delta and the northern part of Central Vietnam, the traditional Viêt society, like most Indochinese and South-Chinese cultures, determined the value of currency by the weight of precious metal (gold or silver). Several archaeological discoveries have shown that gold grains were used as currency. Although Viêt society had a low level of monetarization, the intrinsic value of currency was the basis of the local conception of currency.
