Homer is by far the most quoted and commented among all the ancient Greek poets in the whole of Dio of Prusa's discourses. Yet these references are part of multivarious oratorical or philosophical contexts. The poet was either presented as an authority (especially when the debate dealt with monarchical culture) or criticized as a person or in his text, the latter being taken over for oratorical needs, when the practice of sophistic eloquence allowed it. The word of the poet must be transmitted, but not before an attentive scrutiny, and perhaps some readjustments too.
