Franchising, competition and incentives The paper reviews some of the recent contributions of incitative theory to the choice of franchising contracts and to the design of auctions. It first analyses the determinants of optimal risk sharing between the franchisor and the franchisee. It then identifies some hazards faced by long-term relationships and briefly discusses the costs and benefits of budget balance and privatization.
