The State, the National Economy and State finance in Japan between the 17th and the 19th Centuries This article describes the State economic and financial policies in Japan, between the 17th and the 19th centuries. The role played by the Japanese State in the economic development of the country has always been very important. It has been characterised from the 17th till the middle of the 19th century by the predominance of the Tokugawa system, which has been first similar to the western medieval systems and then to the German federal system.
