Ambulatory Nurse Residency Program at the University of Utah Health: A Quality Improvement Project

Background: Nurse residency programs for ambulatory care are becoming increasingly popular as the need for ambulatory nurses increases. Ambulatory nurse residency programs should include hands-on practice through simulations or practice activities that increase confidence. The need for practice scenarios has been identified as a potential gap that could improve ambulatory nurse residency. Methods: A quality improvement project was developed to create simulations and hands-on practice for a newly developed ambulatory nurse residency program. A nurse resident, ambulatory manager, and various ambulatory educators at the University of Utah Health were assessed to identify potential learning gaps. Simulation standards were identified, and various simulation and hands-on activities were created to increase confidence and competence in nurse residents. Results: The learning gaps were separated into four categories: communication, critical thinking, emergency management, and tirage. At least one practice activity or simulation was created using an evidence-based approach for each category. Conclusions: The simulations and practice scenarios are valuable in increasing the confidence and competence of ambulatory care nurse residents. The practice activities and simulations must be implemented to determine their initial effectiveness, and adjustments will be made to tailor them to the ambulatory care setting.
