Archaeology and liturgy : the case of the dedication of the church and the consecration of the altar, by Bénédicte Palazzo-Bertholon and Éric Palazzo Increasingly in recent years, investigations have been made into the relationship between archaeology and liturgy, given the strong historical foundations of the study of medieval liturgy and the opening up of archaeology to scientific disciplines. The present article examines the symbolic meaning of technical vocabulary relating to whitewashes and wall coverings in the text of the ritual for the dedication of the church and the consecration of the altar in the Roman pontifical. It seems quite probable that the use of technical words to designate these materials in this liturgical text, which was used for the foundation of a church, concerns their symbolism as defined by medieval theologians.Les rapports entre archéologie et liturgie ont tait l'objet ces dernières années d'investigations nouvelles, étant donné l'ancrage historique fort de l'étude de la liturgie médiévale et l'ouverture aux disciplines scientifiques de l'archéologie. Le présent article examine la signification symbolique du vocabulaire technique relatif aux enduits et aux mortiers contenu dans le texte du rituel de la dédicace de l'église et de la consécration de l'autel du Pontifical romain. Il apparaît fort vraisemblable que l'emploi des mots techniques pour désigner les enduits et les mortiers dans ce texte liturgique utilisé pour la fondation d'une église concerne le symbolisme des matériaux de construction défini par les théologiens médiévaux.Palazzo-Bertholon Bénédicte, Palazzo Éric.
