Several philosophical conceptions of space coexist. Considered as a substance, space is distinct - or not, according to authors -, from matter and mind. As a shape or a property of the conscience, it has often given birth to the deterministic interpretations of the complex relationship which societies have with it. Produced, perceived, represented and lived in, the social space constitutes the material basis of the territory. Even if it does not correspond to a strict political reality, the territory pictures a range of places and symbolic significances. It identifies itself to a social representation defined by the meaning given by the human communities that take possession of it.Il existe plusieurs conceptions philosophiques de l'espace. Considéré comme une substance, il se distingue ou non, selon les auteurs, de la matière et de l'esprit. Forme ou propriété de la conscience, il a parfois suscité des interprétations déterministes du rapport complexe que les sociétés nouent avec lui. Produit, perçu, représenté et vécu, l'espace social constitue la base matérielle du territoire. Même s'il ne correspond pas à une stricte réalité politique, le territoire décrit un champ de lieux et de significations symboliques.
