Several philosophical conceptions of space coexist. Considered as a substance, space is distinct - or not, according to authors -, from matter and mind. As a shape or a property of the conscience, it has often given birth to the deterministic interpretations of the complex relationship which societies have with it. Produced, perceived, represented and lived in, the social space constitutes the material basis of the territory. Even if it does not correspond to a strict political reality, the territory pictures a range of places and symbolic significances.
