Hijrah in the Millennial Era: Study of the Hijrah Community in Surabaya

This research begins with the emergence of the term hijra, which is popular with millennials. This hijra phenomenon can be seen in an increasing number of millennials wearing beards, pants above the ankle, and veils. This study aims to clarify the hijra phenomenon among millennials in Surabaya through the hijra community. Furthermore, this study aims to answer the meaning of hijra per hijra community and forms of hijra from hijra communities. The study also describes different definitions of hijras, categories of hijras by each hijra community, different activities of hijra communities, and development of hijra communities. To elucidate the hijra phenomenon, the researchers used qualitative methods and analyzed the hijra phenomenon using Max Weber's theory of social behavior. The approach used is a sociological approach. This study uses the data analysis method of Miles and Huberman to facilitate understanding of the data. The hijra communities targeted in this study are Remaja Hijrah Surabaya (RHS), Hijrah Institute and Airlangga Hijrah. The results of this study show that each hijra community has different meanings and ideologies about the hijra. These differences have created three hijra communities with different activities and ways to attract millennials. Members following each hijra community have an exclusive and inclusive ideology. He has an exclusive ideology because he wants to gain religious knowledge only with Ustaz, who shares the same understanding. But it also has an overarching ideology that appeals to millennials regardless of who they are
