Rome's relationship with the peoples and cities of Italy between 285 and 280 B.C., in the light of a fragment of Cassius Dio, DHA 33/1, 2007, 47-70. Abstract: Starting from a fragment by Cassius Dio (fg. 39.1), the author takes into account an embassy disregarded by the modern historians of Roman diplomacy, that of Fabricius which the successive editors have situated in 283 B.C. The notice is reappraised in the light of the conflicts involving Rome against the Gauls, the Etruscans and the Umbrians together with the preparation for war in South Italy, in Tarentum.
