Among the early medieval illustrations of Rev. 9 : 1-12, those found in Beatus' commentary show exceptional influence from ancient Near Eastern art. The Revelation of St. John, by way of Jewish Apocalypses (biblical and extra-biblical), is dependent on Mesopotamian iconography. This dependence is insufficient explanation for the affiliations between the Beatus illustrations and certain mythological creatures appearing in several monuments from ancient Babylonia and the Hittite Empire. The iconographical parallels between the "locusts" of Rev. 9 : 1-12 portrayed by the Beatus illustrators and the Mesopotamian scorpion-men permit us to postulate a direct inspiration deriving from models introduced via the Oriental and Arabie world.
