Between 1900 and 2000 studying literature of the Middle Ages has changed considerably : not only has the number of known facts increased, but methods for approaching texts have also evolved. In this short survey of the major exegetical currents of the XXth Century, emphasis is given to the link between research on medieval literature and the institutional and academie context. In the course of one century, the literature of the Middle Ages has gained its true status and esteem. Looked upon as « childlike » and « innocent » around 1900, the texts of the Middle Ages are today recognised as fully grown literature of a level equal to the production of more recent centuries.
