The contention of this paper is to show that the complex architectural and sculptural programs of St. Martin in Candes comprise a coherent program and, plausibly, echo local historical events through its visual patterns. The exceptional structure of its northern façade and porch, as well as its remarkable sculptural program which bears royal iconography, gives credence to the associations of the church with a royal or princely court. The different images of nobility and royalty constitute a visual representation of a successive dynastie group, which, I believe, serve not only as a token of status but, above all, as a political manifestation in the crucial years of the harsh rivalry between the Plantagenet and the Capetians.
