E., Paris & Luis Filipe Thomaz, Université Nouvelle, Lisbonne Un opuscule latin sur la prise de Malacca par les Portugais, imprimé en Italie en 1514 The text presented and translated here was published, probably in Rome, in 1514; it is owed to Francis Chalderia or Caldiera, a Friar who stayed in Portugal for two years (ca. 1512-1514). It is mainly based upon the Epistola Potentissimi ac Inuictissimi Emanuelis Regis Portugaliae & Algarbiorum, & c., de Victoriis habitis in India & Malacha, a letter from Emmanuel I, King of Portugal (r. 1495-1521), to the Pope Leo X, telling him the conquest of Malacca by the Portugueses forces, under the commandment of Afonso de Albuquerque, which was printed in Rome in 1513. Chalderia adds thereto some news he listened in Portugal, about the Portuguese contacts with Hormuz, Ethiopia, Congo and Brazil. Some of those news also appear in the Nova Victoria del S[ erenissimo] Re de Portogallo in India, an Italian undated booklet printed roughly in the same period, although it is difficult to discern who repeats whom. Most of the facts are known from other sources, but the booklet is anyhow interesting as a testimony of the diffusion of the information got by the Portuguese discoveries and expeditions, particularly that concerning Southeast Asia. It also bears witness to the survival of the Crusading ideas in Portugal and in Europe.Aubin Jean, Thomaz Luis Filipe F. R.
