Following an itinerary of illustrations, this article attempts to show how a new modernism was introduced into Indonesia. Setting this early twentieth-century artistic encounter in the context of the Archipelago, it analyses the social milieus that ushered in modernity, focusing on an elite composed of some members of local aristocracy, the privileged class of Western residents, Chinese people, and Eurasians (Indo). Finally, it assesses the impact of those influences, analysing the things that struck the eyes of the inhabitants (architecture, cinema, furniture, sculpture, graphic design).Hamonic Gilbert.
