A number of complex and inter-related processes have left their imprint on the regional geography of social well-being in Western Europe since 1930. Meanwhile, different theoretical perspectives have hypothesized different outcomes in terms of regional inequalities. In this paper, infant mortality rates are used as an indicator of regional social well-being in order to evaluate these hypotheses. It is established that, while absolute differences between regions have narrowed considerably, there has been no significant overall change in relative inequality between West European regions.
