Dependency on a Gilbertese atoll: a case study of Abemama Island. — Abemama, in the remote Micronesian island group of Kiribati (formerly part of the Gilbert & Ellice Islands Colony) provides an interesting example of the interaction between the subsistence and cash economies and of evolving dependence on the outside world. Dependency is part of an historical process which began in the mid 19th century as tobacco and hoop iron became keenly desired items of trade. Gunboat diplomacy completed Abemama's subjection to British rule towards the end of the century, conversion to Christianity followed and a dual social structure evolved.
