Australian Urbanization. — Urbanization has played a major role in the geography of Australia. In a country characterized by abundant space, population has shown a tendency to concentrate in a few large metropolitan areas. These areas have dominated the social, political and economic life of individual states. Until recently the metropolitan areas have continued to attract the majority of growth in population and economic activity and as a result have suffered a number of internal problems in coping with that growth. In the past ten years however, changing social, economic and political conditions have altered the nature of growth and development in these areas.
