Dans les jardins de Djemila

Related to W.F. Jashemski 's researches on the gardens of the Roman Empire, study and new interpretation of the gardens in two roman domus at Cuicul (Djemila, Algeria). In the house of Asinus Nica, the sight towards the enclosed inner space of the peristyle - half intricate pools, half planted space - had to be enjoyed from the first floor, from a supposed reception room. In the so-called house of Bacchus, there are three gardens, the evolution of which can be observed during three centuries. On the end of IInd or beginning ofnfd century, the west garden, joining the building with the dionysiac pavement to little bathes, included a terrace, a large rectangular pool with a pergola, a statue of Venus and a well. It was reduced by the large seven apses hall and a fish pool extending from the oecus, both constructed in the middle of Vth century. Considerations about the transformation of human attitude towards Nature and about the integration of real landscape into roman house decoration.En relation avec les recherches de W.F. fashemski sur les jardins de l'Empire romain, étude et nouvelle interprétation des jardins de deux domus de Cuicul (Djemila, Algérie) : la maison de l'Âne, avec des bassins imbriqués et un viridarium enclos dont le plan peut s'expliquer par l'hypothèse d'une salle de réception à l'étage, et la « maison de Bacchus », avec trois jardins dont on peut suivre l'évolution sur trois siècles. À la fin du IIe ou au début du IIIe s., le jardin ouest, reliant la salle à mosaïque dionysiaque au sud à de petits thermes au nord, comportait une terrasse, un grand bassin rectangulaire, une pergola, une statue de Vénus et une source. Il fut amoindri par la construction, au milieu du Ve s., de la salle à sept absides et du vivier prolongeant l'oecus.
