Their application to the pendling in Belgium. — Choroplethic maps presupposes that each area is homogenous and that its values are different from those belonging to other areas : every area must therefore, by definition, be limited by a discontinuity and cannot contain any. The article analyses from this point of view the principal » methods used to define areas (conventional limits, scientific research into discontinuities, typological analyses) and puts forward a computerized method, following the same principle, to measure deviations from the general model.
