The French city of Eu treasures the relic of St Lawrence O'Toole, bishop of Dublin during Henry II's reign. Lawrence was first abbot of Glendalough, then bishop, and finally archbishop of Dublin in 1162. He led the life of a monk, among the Augustinian canons he appointed to the chapter of his cathedral. In spite of his contemplative life style, he was involved in the diplomatic affairs of his time. His niece was the wife of the earl of Pembroke who came to Ireland in 1170 and became king of Leinster in 1171. Henry II "conquered" Ireland in 1171/72.
