Writing and rewriting history from Harar to Awsa : a reappraisal of the Taʾrīkh al-mulūk

International audienceThis article focuses on a particular moment in the historiography of Harar (Eastern Ethiopia) : when the city declined, and the seat of power was transferred to the Awsa Oasis in 1576. Three chronicles, two of which are rewritings of the original version, were then composed. This historiographical ebullition reflects the scale of the disruption signified by the shift towards Awsa as well as the oppositions it sparked. Based on a comparative study of the three chronicles, this article attempts to understand the reasons behind this transfer of power.Cet article s’intéresse à un moment particulier dans l’écriture de l’histoire de Harar (Éthiopie orientale) : lorsque la ville décline et que le pouvoir est transféré vers l’oasis de l’Awsa, en 1576. Trois chroniques, dont deux sont des réécritures de la première, sont alors rédigées. Cette ébullition historiographique traduit l’envergure de la rupture que signifie le déplacement vers l’Awsa, ainsi que les oppositions qu’il suscite.
