Town, schooling system and social inequalities. The progress made in schooling for all stands out even more in the towns where the biggest schools and universities are to be found. However, disparities still exist and sometines are intensified for some groups or places. The survey carried out in the urban area of Bordeaux sheds some light on the means contrived by an educational society, the reality of differentiated poles and the inequality of chances in a given area. Beyond the «democratization» of secondary schooling, which is a always the main concern, one can but wonder if the progress underway will not add even more to the social and spatial diversification of professional channels in the town.Les progrès accomplis en matière de généralisation d'enseignement sont particulièrement apparents dans les villes où sont installés les grands établissements scolaires et universitaires. Cette progression ne saurait cependant cacher les disparités qui se maintiennent et parfois se renforcent selon les groupes et les espaces sociaux. L'analyse réalisée dans l'agglomération bordelaise illustre à la fois l'appareillage d'une société éducative, la formation de pôles différenciés et l'inégalité des chances selon les espaces. Au-delà de la « démocratisation » de l'enseignement secondaire, qui reste le fait majeur, se pose la question de savoir si la progression engagée ne va pas renforcer la diversification socio-spatiale des filières dans les villes.Augustin Jean-Pierre.
