Couroucli Maria - "Diglossia and double talk. Languages and speech about honour in Greece". Linguistic situation of modern Greece is characterised as diglossia: coexistence of a highly dialectalised "folk" language (dimotiki) and of a "purified" language (katharevousa), which is both official and written. Some speech habits involving demotics are transcribed-translated into katharevousa within official reports. So, by analysing the records of hearings of a county court in Crete, one can display those moments when folk language irrupts into the translation, in relation with the latent conflict between official law and customary law.
